Book Review: Big Magic

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert is one of those books you read that keeps you entertained while giving amazing advice. It each page cheers you on, but also slaps you in the face with being real and honest. This book is one that every photographer, artist, musician, movie director, actor, writer, and blogger should read. If you loved Eat, Pray, Love then you’ll love this book…especially since it’s the same author!

In this book Elizabeth talks about her struggle to fully accept her writing gift and didn’t think she could actually be a writer….even after writing Eat, Pray, Love. She was too stuck on the idea that creative careers are not real or lasting ones, and she should stick to her other job. In Big Magic she talks about how she overcame that battle and finally accepted her gift.

Big Magic has 6 major parts to it:

  1. Courage
  2. Enchantment
  3. Permission
  4. Persistence
  5. Trust
  6. Divinity

I won’t go into too much detail (no spoilers here folks!) BUT I will say that the advice she gives is unique and life changing. She teaches us to respect the ideas that come into out life and how to handle them. Big Magic is n easy read, entertaining, and seriously gives the best advise for creatives. If you have been wanting to use your creative gifts, but need a push, this is that push. Keep an open mind and read it. FO REALS. It’s a happy life changing book.
