I was scrolling on Instagram and saw someone posted a political video… Intrigued by it I clicked and watched it.
My first thought was, “hmm yeah that sounds nice.” But he kept saying “what would Jesus do” after every point he wanted to make… So I watched it again and thought, “Something about this seems..not right?” Still not sure what it was yet I watched it a third time and realized something wasn’t clicking with my spirit. So I stopped and thought about what he kept stating. “What would Jesus do?… What would Jesus do?….What would Jesus do?” I thought about His time on earth I realized what was not clicking for me and what I had read on scripture…Jesus didn’t challenge the political and economic systems, He was challenging people’s hearts and how they lived. He really didn’t say much of anything about the government or other public systems.
The only time I can recall is when people were paying taxes in God’s temple and he tossed the tables, but he wasn’t angry about the taxes he was angry about defiling what was God’s space. In Matthew 12-13, “Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
In Matthew 20-22, “And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.””
Jesus stated in John 18:36, Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
He does not care for earthly politics or systems, he cares about bringing us to the Father to spend eternity with Him.
So… When people say “what would Jesus do about the government” or “What would Jesus do about this system.” He would do nothing. When He was here on Earth He did not pay much attention to the unjust systems, taxes, etc. He was more focused on people’s relationship with God.
That leaves me with a few questions. Are you more passionate about government or are you more passionate about God? Do you get excited or riled up about God’s word and want to share it like the political posts or do you pass by it without a thought? I’m guilty of this. The way our society is wired, it is hard not to be.
So how can we realign our hearts with Him? How can we get out of the hole? Choose reading His word over watching another political video or reading another political article. Live by His teachings. Try to memorize all the books of the Bible. Memorize the commandments. Just spend time in His word.
Think to yourself…Do you really get peace from reading and watching all those articles? Do you truly love people better after reading or watching those? The answer is probably “No.” You end up hating people after reading or watching whatever video it is. That is not what God tells us or what Jesus teaches us. If true neighborly love and peace is what you seek, that comes only from God and from us spending time with Him.
