Wood and Nail

What do you see when you look at the cross? Do you just see a symbol? Do you picture Jesus? Are you reminded of that the cross is all about? Maybe a mix of all three depending on the day?

It’s painful to say, but sometimes I pass by and see the cross and feel… nothing. All I see is ink, and my mind doesn’t fully register what I’m actually looking at or the story behind it. I just get so used to seeing the cross printed on signs, drawn on bodies/apparel and I mindlessly glance over it.

But then there are other times I’ll see the cross and collapse to my knees with tears of joy and pain. I’ll see the cross and feel immense Joy for what our Father and Jesus did for each of us. I’ll be reminded about how loved I really am. I’ll also feel the suffocating pain in knowing what God and Jesus went through. Going through all that pain and darkness of being crucified on a cross by the creation He loves. Crying tears of pain in knowing that Christ died for every soul knowing that some will reject Him, some will pretend to know Him, and some end up forgetting Him.

Jesus fulfilled the prophecy on the cross. His body was laid up on the cross, mangled, dripping in blood, quivering in pain, and still He felt protective of us.

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”- Luke 23:34 KJV

I mean look at when He says “Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” I don’t know about you but every time I hear or read that verse my heart stops. How powerful. How beautiful. To be put to death in the most painful way by the creatures He loves and wants to save… And then to say that. I mean….just wow… That shows just how much Jesus loves and cares for us.

The cross not only reminds us of our salvation through Him, but it also reminds us that He walked with us, lived with us, ate with us, and learned about human nature. He learned just how strong temptation was for us to deal with… He learned the pain of rejection, betrayal, and heartache all to better understand us. He learned and conquered the souls most difficult battles. We so often forget that God just wants to know us, and be our every thing. We forget that He loves us so much that He decided to SAVE us. Not redo His creation or force us to love Him. The cross is here to remind us of His pursuit in knowing and loving us.

So next time you catch yourself glancing over the cross, remember that God still loves you the same. His love is unconditional, relentless, unwavering, steadfast, immovable. He loves you the same intense immeasurable amount no matter what. God see’s your human love and understands. It is because of Jesus that we can freely love God. The cross is more than wood and nails. It is a symbol of Christ’s unworldly, relentless, everlasting, and soul-binding love.

Mark 8:34 – And when he had called the people [unto him] with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

1 Corinthians 1:18 – For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Galatians 2:20 – I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
